Nokia 3310 review 2017 - A hands on review of the most popular vintage phone

Nokia has created a huge wave at MWC 2017 with the relaunch of its Vintage device - the Nokia 3310. What does Nokia want to prove with this launch? In the current age of smartphones, will a feature phone with limited features succeed gaining any market share? Let us find out in this review of the new revamped Nokia 3310.

Nokia 3310 - How does it fit in the present scenario?

A phone from the days gone by. Nokia 3310 was one of the most popular devices when it was first launched and when mobile phones were still in its nascent stage.

It was the most indestructible device with a battery with great battery backup. The new device is an homage to the iconic device that ruled the mobile phone world once.

The Looks and the Display

The phone has a striking resemblance to the vintage device.  phone "copies" all the looks from the original phone. This phone is made of plastic and is available in bright colors. That is something that should make you go nostalgic.

There are a few differences, though. The screen is a little bigger at 2.4 inches. It is slimmer and lighter than the original. The silver collar around the screen continues to have its existence. The construction appears to be perfect and solid, but only time will tell whether it will take the same kind of rough usage that the vintage device could handle.

The phone is available in the older dark blue and gray along with the newer yellow and warm red. Given a choice, we would be choosing the older dark blue and gray color. The display has received an upgrade to 2.4 inches, and at 240 x 320 resolution.

The interface

The interface is something that may disturb you if you are looking for something extraordinary. It is neither Android nor Windows Phone. Nokia 3310 will run on Nokia Series 30+ software - the same that ran the vintage Nokia 3310 decades ago.

It has a number of options like Call logs, Contacts, and Calculator among others. Being a feature phone, it excels with its great deal of options and functionalities. The phone has a camera on the rear and the internet connectivity. However, the phone offers you a 2.5 G compatibility. There will be no 3G or 4G speeds available for you. There is no support for WiFi either.

The phone has Bluetooth connectivity. Then there is a music player and a 3.5 mm audio jack as well. These are the new features added to the older device - good decision keeping ahead with times. The device will support the stripped down versions of Facebook and Twitter.

Nokia 3310 - Gaming

The Snake game makes a comeback! The original game has an update. The new variant of the game is named Snake Xenzia and is developed by Gameloft.
The snake has grown colorful now and looks more snakelike. There are several advanced levels and features added to the game. You will use only no. 4 and 6 to play the game. However, you can change it to the four navigational buttons.

There are the other games as well. Some of them include Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Diamond Twister 2, Doodle Jump and Drag Race. However, most of the games are old age and look quite retro in terms of the looks and performance.

Camera

Nokia 3310 did not have a camera on it when it first came out. But, this being the age where you find a camera module even on the cheapest phone, how can you expect Nokia 3310 to lack it? There is a 2 MP camera on the rear, but do not expect the high end things like HDR or flash.

Battery

The phone does have a removable 1200 mAh battery. It may be remembered here that the original 3310 had a 900 mAh battery capacity on it. As per the stats provided by the manufacturer say you will get 22 hours talktime and a 31 days stand by time.
The included charger comes with MicroUSB connector. So that would mean you no longer go searching for the proprietary Nokia charger.

In Conclusion

Well, we would consider that the relaunch of Nokia 3310 has a lot of nostalgia associated with it. For thgose who loved the feel when they first handled a mobile phone during those initial days, it is indeed a fondest purchse ever. If you are someone looking for a backup handset with good enough features, then again Nokia 3310 will definitely be a good buy. Do share your views and opinions about the new launch, or the relaunch rather. Tell us your reasons if you are buying this one.
